A unique art festival for Hong Kong Sculpture on Hong Kong Sea 2009 will open to the public for one full day on Sunday 29 November 2009. The first edition of this outdoor annual event will feature artists from Hong Kong, Asia-Pacific region and the rest of the world. SHKS 2009 will give to the artists the opportunity of a 1 day exhibition along the sea, offering them a unique way of working and exhibiting, possibly allowing them to push the limits of their own practices. End of November is Hong Kong's best light and clear sky season. For the public, it will be a chance to discover some specific and environmental sculptural artworks, made especially for this particular site of Repulse Bay and the Seaview Promenade on the southern coastline of Hong Kong, selected with an original and international approach, in a beautiful natural setting. SHKS is conceived as an active and dynamic project contributing to highlight Hong Kong as a unique cultural place in Asia. Eric Delannoy, Founder and Director.
2009 : 'Lightness' In 'Hong Kong, Scènes d'un monde flottant', a book published in Paris 1983, Kenneth White quotes Ihara Saïkaku who, breaking suddently a flowing story says : 'living today in this floating world, I may be tomorrow a piece of alga on the beach of Oya Shirazu.' 'Scenes of a floating world', for all the distance that comes with a life and all the polyphony that comes with a world. The desire of making the first edition of Sculpture on Hong kong Sea happening on 1 day is to get closer to life, to let more art affect reality. Outdoor. Une exposition, as in French the word for 'exhibition' is the same as for 'exposure'. Lightness : a way of thinking, looking, moving, communicate. Matsuo Bashô says writing a few words for a haïku is the most easy and the most difficult thing at the same time. How spontaneus could be an artwork, how fast could it travel from mind to beach ? What kind of new working methods - new agreements - could be found - sometimes necessary or complementary to the artist studio research ? From the traditional levitation, the diamagnetic levitation, the acoustic levitation, to the simple feeling of being light, Lightness is a challenge for sculpture, seen as an exploration of the relationship between gravity, space, mind, environment, transience and circulation. Without ignoring the global world context, what could be lightness ? Isn't it that desire that keeps things moving ? Not a theme, nor an indication, Lightness for this 2009 SHKS edition is an intimation, a catalyst, a password, a leitmotiv, a secret formula, a question, a state of being bound for new relationships. Ludwig, Artistic Director.
